THE END of "GOING TO WORK"

The skyscraper era ended on September 11th 2001. In the Web era, 90% of those working downtown just don’t need to be there to do their jobs anyway.

There’s much talk of dispersing still more work to exurban low-rise campuses – and right into the home. Already, 45 million North Americans telecommute; another 20 million own home-based businesses. And both totals are growing rapidly.

Working couples are deciding they’d rather have at least one parent at home with the kids. Rethinking career goals and family priorities, workers are re-evaluating what they want from life. Millions will move house – right out of town – in search of a slower pace in a safer place.
